Alumni council

Purpose

The Alumni Association Council functions in an advisory and supportive role to the university and the Office of External Relations in the following ways:

  • serving as leaders in the engagement and activation of the members or partners of the Association
  • serving as an extension of the Office of External Relations regarding development activities
  • serving as the official voice of representation for the Association to the university and community at large

Linda Medina-Lopez received her Masters inEducation with Honors from Concordia University Austin in2005. Currently, she is the Assistant Vice President of Recruitment Business Development for MassMutual Southwest. As the AVP, she is responsible for growing the Austin/Central Texas offices by recruiting representatives that are passionate about helping people find financial freedom.

Linda also serves on the SXSWedu Advisory Board and has served on the Boards of Leadership Austin, City of Austin Commission for Women, is the Founder of the Young Hispanic Professional Association of Austin and is a Co-Founder of El Paso Social Network in Austin. Linda enjoys planning tennis, cooking, traveling and spending time with her husband Joe and the cutest wauzer dog ever, Buddy.

Jonathan JacobsJonathan Jacobs - Vice-Chair

Austin, TX

Jonathan JJ Jacobs is a proud Texan who has lived in West, South, and Central Texas. He had a successful career in the restaurant industry working for TGI Fridays, Logan's Roadhouse, Chil's, Dave Busters, and the Iron Cactus. After meeting his wife Juliana while she was a junior at the University of Texas, he decided he wanted to change career paths to something more stable and that would allow him to grow in his faith. He was fortunate enough to begin working for a privately owned tool manufacturer that placed great importance on continuing education, so he enrolled in the Adult Degree Program at Concordia in the fall of 2009.

He is the Co-Chair of the Alumni Council and is looking forward to bringing the Concordia community together.


 

Ben HaleyBen Haley
M.B.A, '12
Austin, TX

Ben Haley graduated from Concordia in 2012 as a member of the first MBA cohort. He works as a software architect for MaxPoint Interactive. He is an active member of the Church at Canyon Creek where he serves on the preschool board, teaches Sunday school, and serves on the finance committee. He volunteers with Partners in Hope (helping address poverty in the Lakeway area), Rodeo Austin, and serves on the Computer Science Advisory Board for Louisiana Tech University.Ben is married to Ellen Haley, who serves as the Assistant Children's Director at the Church at Canyon Creek. They have two children: Patrick, a graduating senior at the University of Texas planning to attend Princeton Theological Seminary in the fall, and Rebecca, a freshman at the University of Indiana.


 

Jennifer MillerJennifer Miller

Austin, TX

Jennifer Fretwell Miller serves as a corporate accountant at HPI Real Estate Services and Investments . She graduated with her undergraduate degree in Finance from Concordia in 2008 and went back to complete her MBA from Concordia in 2014. She played soccer at Concordia and cofounded the Concordia Baseball Girls club during her undergrad years. She has been married for almost 2 years to her husband, who also graduated with his MBA from Concordia in 2014. They just welcomed their first son, Reed, in January and have a 4 year old German Shepherd named Crockett. She loves to be around family and friends and spend as much time with her loved ones as possible. She has been on the alumni board for a year, and looks forward to seeing how alumni relationships will grow.


 

Kim BattleKim Battle
B.B.A, '08
Austin, TX

Kim Battle is native to Austin, TX and has a BBA from Concordia University Austin. She is Director of Facilities for Pluckers Wing Bar, a restaurant and sports bar concept that started in Austin, TX and has since opened locations in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and the greater Austin area. In addition to serving on the CTX Alumni Council, she also serves on the Board of Trustees for her church. Kim enjoys baking, playing games, and exploring new foods and restaurants. She especially loves traveling and spending time with her family.


 

Tiffany WilsonTiffany Wilson
B.B.A, '12
Austin, TX

Tiffany graduated from Concordia University Texas in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. While in school, she participated in the University Choir, Student Government and Leadership Association, Student Organization Council, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and led the cheerleading squad to two national titles.

She went on to volunteer with her church as the children's worship leader while working for a tax and accounting firm. She was involved in the Concordia Singers until 2015, when she became mom to a beautiful baby boy. She is thankful for the opportunity to help connect and serve fellow alumni.


 

Bettie Horn BendewaldBettie Horn Bendewald
A.A, '57
Austin, TX

Bettie was born in Galveston, TX, raised in San Antonio, TX, and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran - San Antonio by Rev. Roland Weideranders. She graduated from Brackenridge High School in San Antonio and entered Concordia Junior College in 1955. Bettie was part of one of the first classes that included women (14 total) at Concordia. She helped to establish the first Lutheran school in Baton Rouge, LA. Bettie taught for four years in St. Louis, MO and 13 years in Urawa, Japan. She helped to establish the Concordia University Texas Alumni Association in 1996 and was its first president.


 

Mario MartinezMario Martinez
B.A. '96
Austin, TX

Mario is from Austin, TX. He is married to his high school sweetheart Melonie, with whom he has 3 daughters.Mario was a police officer for 10 years with the Austin Police Department. He received a bachelors degree from Concordia University Austin and is currently pursuing a masters degree in Business Administration at CTX. Mario is currently working for the Teacher Retirement System of Texas and in his spare time enjoys recreational running, hiking, and vacationing in Colorado.


 

Brandon Pederson

Brandon Pederson

Austin, TX

Brandon is a Content Marketing Manager for IBM Middleware within the Cloud Business Unit. He has been with IBM since May of 2014 when he was hired a week after his junior year at Concordia University Texas. At IBM he is responsible for content development and strategy for the WebSphere Application Server and StrongLoop portfolio, as well as developer marketing and evangelism. Brandon graduated from Concordia University Texas in May 2015 with a degree in Business Administration. Brandon is also a member of Lakeway Country Club in Lakeway, TX.


 

Hong VoHong Vo
B.A. '14
Austin, TX

Hong Vo was born and raised in Port Arthur, Texas. After graduating high school, she moved to Austin to attend Concordia. While there, she was able to join multiple clubs. During her freshman year, she was a Student Ambassador in Admissions, a senator for the College of Education, and a member of Helping Hands and the astronomy club. During her sophomore year, she was still involved with all of these clubs, as well as working on campus behind the desk of the student center and lobby of the residence halls. During her junior year, she continued giving tours as a Student Ambassador, working behind the desk, and was a babysitter at a local Jazzercise. During her senior year, Hong ran for Vice President in Student Government and founded the Asian Culture Club (ACC).


 

Karon JurgemeyerKaron Jurgemeyer
A.A, '78
Rockwell, IA

Karon was raised in Odessa, Texas and attended Concordia Austin from 1976-1978, graduating with an AA degree. She continued her education at Concordia University in River Forest, IL and graduated in 1981 with a Director of Christian Education certificate and a degree in Elementary Education.

She was called to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa and served as the preschool director and DCE for several years. She then resided in Rockwell, Iowa and became a Domesticated Engineer, farm assistant, volunteer EMT, and Mary Kay Advanced Color Consultant.

Although ministry is still her passion, she has found other ways in which to serve the Lord to the best of her ability.

She has three children and a grandchild due in August. Her children include Thomas, a member of the United States Air Force; Jodi,an organist and Graduate Assistant for the University of Nebraska; and Brittany, a middle school teacher in Urbandale, Iowa.


 

Cynthia HernandezCynthia Hernandez
B.A. '10
Austin, TX

Cynthia (Cindy) Hernandez has lived in Austin since 1975. She graduated from Reagan High School in 1980, but spent two years in Venezuela from 1977-1979. She received her associates degree in Business from Austin Community College in 1987 and has a vocational degree in Upholstery from Austin Community College, obtained in 1994. One of her goals was to obtain her bachelor's degree, so she enrolled at Concordia University Austin in January 2008. At that time, she was also working and taking care of her family. She graduated cum laude in May 2010.

Cindy volunteered her time as a band mom while her two daughters were in high school. She held the office of Vice President for the Band Boosters for one year, and President of the Band Scholarship Foundation for two years. She is also an Honorable Member of the FFA at Pflugerville High School. She presently works at Austin Community College as an Executive Assistant for the Department of External Affairs, and is also on ACC's Alumni Council.


 

Nichole Allison
M.Ed '14
Austin, TX

Nichole truly considers it an honor to serve her alma mater in the capacity of the Alumni Association, and she is very thankful for the opportunity. She is a double alumna of Concordia and former student athlete of the volleyball and basketball programs. She graduated in 2014 with a Master's in Education and previously with a Bachelor's of Business Administration - Management.

The objective she has in mind for serving in this capacity is to give insight on how important the voice of the student is to the university. She strongly believes this will continually impact, shape, and maximize the experiences of future students. She also wants to share experiences that will promote continued involvement with Concordia beyond their collegiate years. She hopes to inspire others to visualize and explore how they might make meaningful, long-lasting contributions to the mission and vision of the Alumni Association and the institution.


 

Size

The Council typically consists of 5 to 11 alumni Partners.

Appointment

Members of the Council are appointed by Partners of the Association each year at the annual meeting.

Officers

Each year the Council elects from among its members a Chair and Vice Chair.
