Five ways to celebrate Thanksgiving alone

home aloneWhile attending college, (particularly students who are hours, or even states, away from their families,) it is not uncommon to spend Thanksgiving alone. After all, traveling can be expensive, and some students have jobs that they can’t abandon. Here are five ways you can still celebrate the holiday!

Volunteer: Remember the name? It’s Thanksgiving! Be grateful for what you have and go serve others at food pantries or charities. Operation Turkey and and Meals on Wheels are just two of many volunteer options in the Austin area. Without volunteers, these families would not be able to put on a nice dinner for their parents, children, grandchildren, etc. No one should go hungry on Thanksgiving.

Go see a movie: Watch a movie (or two) that you couldn’t convince someone else to go see with you. Whether it be a guilty pleasure or something everyone else has already seen, there is something so satisfying about not worrying about looking for seats together and eating an entire box of popcorn alone.

Cook something from scratch: Being alone doesn’t mean going hungry. Open a cookbook (or go to Pinterest) and find a complicated recipe and conquer it. It doesn’t even have to be a Thanksgiving meal if you don’t want it to be! There is something so satisfying about preparing something to eat that you don’t have to share with anyone. The best part? If you screw it up no one will be there to judge you except whoever is delivering your pizza after the fail!

Make it a day about you: Do what you feel like doing! No one will be around to tell you to be at grandma’s by this time, to bring this dish or to eat another bite of that casserole. Want to go to the gym? Go for it! Feel like reading an entire book in peace? This is the time! Want to eat cranberry sauce straight out of the can while watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? Who is stopping you? Wake up when you want, watch the Lions battle the Vikings without someone making your turn off the TV, be selfish and then be grateful that you are afforded the luxury to live like this.

Find other college stragglers: Chances are, you aren’t the only one roughing it alone for Thanksgiving. If the idea of spending the day by yourself is too much for you to bear, do something with your fellow Tornados. Maybe you can even create your own traditional turkey dinner together. #adulting
