DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I appreciate diversity. So I work with diverse media, sometimes mixing them,
because I like trying new things and returning to old things. My appreciation
of diversity also leads me to work with a variety of styles and techniques as
I approach painting or making prints. So, sometimes I follow the path of realism,
sometimes the path of abstraction and other times the path of non-objectivity.
What I choose to do comes from a sense of play, from a sense of wanting to find
out what will happen if I mix Quinacridone Violet with Dioxazine Purple, but
more often I want to communicate something visually. I don’t focus on
a particular subject or content for too long; I move on. But I do place a high
value on content. I believe that art should be about something other than itself.
I want my art to point to something bigger than my idiosyncratic technique.
As a result of this desire for my art to be about something bigger, I often
focus on the sacred, or the significant and, at times, the silly.
