Basketball teams head to ASC Tournament

this weekend; first time in school history to qualify in same season

The men’s and women’s basketball teams both qualified for the American Southwest Conference (ASC) tournament in the same season for the first time ever since joining the ACS in 1999.

The men’s basketball team earned a spot in the tournament after its win over Sul Ross State University in late January, allowing the team to clinch second place in the ACS West Division standings behind Mary Hardin Baylor. The men’s basketball team will head into the ACS conference ranked fifth out of the entire NCAA III South Division. This will be the team’s sixth appearance within seven years at the tournament.

The women’s team—although currently unranked in the NCAA III South Division—secured its second place position in the ACS West Division standings behind Howard Payne University, with a recent victory against Hardin Simmons University. The Lady Tornados, led by Head Coach Rusty Rainbolt, were ACS Conference Champions in 2012.

“These young men and women have worked tirelessly, not only throughout the season, but all year long to prepare for this,” Stan Bonewitz, athletic director and the head coach of the men’s basketball team, said. “Watching our men and women compete for the title of champion exemplifies the continued growth of Concordia’s athletic program.”

The men will travel to The University of Texas-Dallas Friday, Feb. 22 through Sunday, Feb. 24 to compete in the first round of the tournament. The women will travel to Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas Friday, Feb. 22 through Sunday, Feb. 24 to compete in the first round of the tournament. Winners from those tournaments will move on to the national tournament- date and time to be determined.
