A Conversation on the Plight of Women in India

Director of Ministry for Mission India, Dr. Kamala, to speak at CTX

On Monday, March 3, literacy expert and Director of Ministry for Mission India, Dr. Kamala, will speak at Concordia University Texas to the Austin community about the plight of women in India. Her presentation will focus on how God is working through Bible-based literacy classes to open these women’s eyes and hearts to the word of God.

Dr. Kamala’s presentations will take place at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Building A on Concordia’s main campus. This event is free and open to the community. A reception will follow both presentations. RSVP to Robert Adams at Robert.adams@missionindia.org.

In India, millions suffer from malnutrition, illiteracy and lack of health care and face social evils like dowry abuse, forced abortions and religious prostitution. Most women in India have never heard of Jesus and have no idea that there is a God.

Facts about the plight of women in India:

  • 1 in 3 women in India cannot read
  • Every day in India, an estimated 17 women are victims of “bride burning” (dowry abuse)
  • 57% of men in India believe it is justified for husbands to beat their wives
  • 53% of women also believe this abuse is justified
  • 85% of women in India don’t receive full pre-natal care
  • India’s estimated 40 million widows are often rejected by family and community as cursed by the gods

Mission India provides adult literacy classes led by local volunteers who are trained by Mission India’s national ministry staff, and students receive classes in reading, writing and math skills. They also educate in nutrition and sanitation, basic rights and responsibilities as citizens and ways to increase family income through home-based businesses.

Dr. Kamala holds a Ph.D. in education and economics from the University of Madras, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees in both education and chemistry from Osmania University in Hyderabad, India. She developed Mission India’s indigenous Bible-based literacy primers, which are available today in nearly 30 of India’s major languages. Her main focus is on training so indigenous leadership can be developed on a massive scale.
