Pre-Seminary Program

Concordia's Pre-Seminary Program prepares young men for entrance into one of the seminaries of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Both seminaries require a well-rounded education leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree with specific requirements for courses in speech and religion. Both recommend two or more years of instruction in Biblical Greek and Hebrew. Language preparation at Concordia consists of two or more years of Greek and one year of concentrated Hebrew. Latin, German, and Spanish are also available. The Ministry Preparation course brings all the
pre-seminary students together for discussion of topics essential to Christian ministry. Other seminary prerequisites are satisfied at Concordia through the core curriculum and upper- level religion classes.

Growth Opportunities

Concordia's Pre-Seminary students have opportunities for ministry while still in college. Students often assist in leading the daily morning chapel services; evening chapel services are entirely student-planned and student-led. Various organizations on campus allow students to minister to God's people through community service. Bible studies are available on campus for students to participate in or lead.

Special Features

A student may fulfill all seminary entrance requirements at Concordia by selecting any one of five majors offered: Behavioral Sciences, Communication, English, History, or Liberal Arts. Other majors can be used only by approval of the Pre-Seminary Education Committee.

Behavioral Sciences

The Behavioral Sciences major draws from three academic areas - psychology, sociology and communication. The pre-seminary student completing this major will gain practical abilities required in many problem solving situations and in dealing with human behavior.

Communication

A student preparing for the seminary will find the study of communication especially useful. Regardless of the truth, beauty and majesty of the message, a minister cannot transmit it well without an understanding of communication principles. A communication student also gains skills in employing different forms of media to share the message of the Savior with the world.

English

The English major offers students the opportunity to develop skills in reading, analyzing, and communicating clearly, cogently, and coherently. A pre-seminary student choosing this major will be well-trained to communicate the Good News through speaking and writing.

History

One of the areas of education necessary to prepare a man to serve in the Church well is the knowledge of Man. The pre-seminary student who completes a History major will be well-equipped to study People their history, culture, and background - and therefore, better able to minister to their needs.

Liberal Arts

The Liberal Arts major offers the pre-seminary student the unique opportunity to study a broad range of subject areas - language and literature, social and behavioral sciences, ethnic and religious studies, music, and communication. A graduate of the program has a wide background of knowledge which furnishes a comprehensive view of God's world and man's place in it.
