World Community Grid

Concordia University Texas is partnering with IBM Corporation and more than 350 companies, associations, foundations, and academic institutions as participants in the World Community Grid. In so doing, Concordia has agreed to donate its idle computer time to assist in a variety of humanitarian scientific research projects that will make the world a better and more peaceful place.

The World Community Grid uses special technology to create a permanent and flexible infrastructure providing researchers with an available pool of computing power that can be used to solve problems being faced by people around the World. IBM has donated all the software and expertise to launch the World Community Grid, including free hosting, maintenance and support.

For individuals to join go to www.worldcommunitygrid.org then, click on the “download now” box and follow the instructions to download the software onto your own computer. When idle, your computer will be given a computational task, and then send this back to the grid when complete, thus prompting the grid to assign the next task to be performed. Similar to a jigsaw puzzle with a million tiny pieces, your computer will be making a small but crucial contribution to the solution of such important problems as AIDS, climate change, human genome analysis, finding drugs for dengue fever, and other projects to come.

Since its founding, the World Community Grid has grown to include over 325,000 members representing over 700,000 computers, which have contributed 115,000 years of run time. Members can be found on every continent and in most countries, although the U.S. and Europe contribute the largest share.

To qualify for usage of the World Community Grid, a research proposal must be not-for-profit, and the resulting knowledge gain must remain in the public domain and thus benefit the global research community. The World Community Grid makes it possible for projects to be undertaken when the sponsoring researchers would otherwise be unable to afford the high cost of super computers.

Concordia University Texas celebrates the partnership with IBM and the World Community Grid! Through this partnership, and with God’s help, we can help bring about continuous gradual progress in achieving important humanitarian research goals.

Concordia University Texas is asking that faculty, staff and students who join the World Community Grid become a member of the “Concordia University Texas” team by clicking on the following link: join Concordia University Team
