The theory of servant leadership was developed in 1977 by Robert Greenleaf who defined it as "servant first, making sure that other people's highest priority needs are being served." Others have used the idea to promore a new type of workplace, re-invented hierarchies, and a foundation for leadership develpment. Even the Christian tradition has supported this concept, using Jesus as an example of servant leadership.
Dr. Larry Meissner, Concordia Professor of Biology for 41 years, has exemplified this type of leadership, impacting thousands of students during that time. He has served in a variety of positions and taught numerous courses, including his famous travel trips to such places as the Grand Canyon, Hawaii and Belize. He has directed the development of the Friesenhahn Cave and has been instrumental in educating students, faculty and staff about The Concordia Preserve. His passion for students and their learning is evident by the large number of alumni who still call him friend and mentor.
'Doc' Meissner will speak on the topic "Defining Servant Leadership" at Concordia University Texas on Thursday, April 3 from Noon -1pm in the Auditorium of Building A. Come and listen in as he shares his thoughts on leadership, service, and his experiences as a professor at Concordia over these many years.
Hosted by the University's College of Business, this talk is part of the "Conversations With..." Speaker Series sponsored by Regions Bank, which is open to the greater Austin community. A different speaker is featured each month, focusing on professionals from the Austin area who model leadership through their chosen vocation.
