Countdown to Concordia's relocation:
February 7th, 2007 AUSTIN, TEXAS—Concordia University at Austin today unveiled the Master Site Plan for its future home—a 389-acre property in North Austin that was originally developed by Schlumberger in 1987. After 80 years in its present location, Concordia will move in 2008 from its current 23-acre campus in Central Austin to the new location.
“Concordia is embarking on a unique relocation and expansion process within higher education,” said Dr. Tom Cedel, President of Concordia University at Austin. “Like many other campuses, Concordia is in need of expansion, but rather than try to create more space at our current confined location, we elected to move our entire campus to the relative openness of the new site. This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Concordia’s history.”
After selecting the site for its future home from among 30 possibilities, Concordia selected a team of project managers and architects to guide the creation of its new campus. Those consultants include Herndon Stauch & Associates, Barnes Gromatzky Kosarek Architects, Bommarito Group, Bury + Partners, Jackson Galloway Architecture and TBG Partners. As a first step in the relocation process, Concordia developed a Master Site Plan.
“The Master Site Plan represents a physical vision for the main campus of Concordia over the next 30 to 40 years,” said Rev. Dr. David Kluth, Vice President, University Services, Concordia University at Austin. “The plan is designed to make the most effective and efficient use of the land at the new location, while preserving its inherent beauty and environmental integrity.”
With hundreds of acres of woodland and six buildings totaling 195,000 square feet, the new property will allow Concordia to continue its growth trend. Concordia will renovate the existing space into classrooms, a library, student services space and a cafeteria. The University will build a performing arts auditorium, an athletic field house, facilities for science programs and apartment-style dorms. It will also build sports fields, tennis courts and volleyball facilities.
Concordia’s new site includes 250 acres of nature preserve, with wetlands, caves, dense tree cover and a habitat area for the Golden-Cheeked Warbler. At the new campus, Concordia will be one of a few universities in the U.S. to hold a Fish and Wildlife 10A permit. With this, the University will play a leadership role in urban environmental studies and offer students the rare opportunity to study environmental management and stewardship.
Concordia officials expect to close on the purchase of the new site in late March of 2007 with construction beginning later in the Spring. Classes will begin on the new campus in Fall of 2008.
