A Religious Education major will prepare you for a variety of careers in the ministry-related field.
You'll gain understanding and be equipped with the skills to work with and lead people of all ages for various ministries inside and outside of the church.
This degree is ideal for those called to these ministries:
- Camp / Outdoor
- Music / Worship Leading
- Urban / Intercity Missions
- Overseas Missions
- Dramatic Arts
The Religious Education major is tailored to your interests through the addition of a specialization or minor program. Options are listed at right.
As a Religious Education major, you have the option of getting certified as a DCE (Director of Christian Education) in the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.
This certificate allows you to be rostered as a DCE in the LCMS.
We believe practical experience is the best teacher. Each semester you will have opportunities for fieldwork and hands-on experience with local ministries around Austin.
During your senior year as a Religious Education student, you will be placed in a local congregation to be mentored by a current DCE or youth minister, where you will learn through observation and by leading certain ministry activities.
This practicum experience usually requires around 10 hours per week.
For those pursuing a DCE certificate
After graduation, you will perform and carry out the duties of a DCE in a directed and supervised, academic, one-year experience in a congregational or missional setting in order to be certified as a DCE.
The paid, benefited internship is designed to enable the student to experience as many aspects of the educational and youth ministries in a parish as possible.
After the one-year internship, you may have the opportunity to be called as a full-time DCE in that congregation or be called to a different location.
For more information, visit the Director of Christian Education Program page.
For those not pursuing a DCE certificate
You may still do a supervised internship in order to gain practical experience, but you are not required to do so.
