Gabriella's Window: Staying Healthy Against All Odds

sick-dogAround this time of year leaves are falling, the temperature is dropping, teas are getting hotter and noses are getting runnier. Students across campus are starting to notice scratchy throats, runny noses and headaches.

I am going to give some tips on how to 1) stay healthy and 2) recover if you are feeling ill.

How to stay healthy

Make sure you are drinking enough water. Water is extremely crucial to all organs within the body. When you drink water, your mind, heart and tummy are happy.

Eat fruits and veggies. Having a balanced diet can also help you maintain your vitamin levels, which help prevent illness. The veggies in your ramen don’t count! Check out the dining hall menu if you’re looking for fresh veggies without the pain of cooking them!

Sleep! Sleep is how our bodies recharge and properly prepare for the next day. Lack of sleep can cause your immune system to be shot.

Wash your hands! We’re told this all the time, but as we get older we the for granted the luxury of protecting ourselves against germs with this simple, easy step. I always keep a small hand sanitizer in my bag just in case!

How to recover if you’re feeling ill

I’ve said it a lot of times, but I’ll say it again: sleep! When you’re not feeling well, it is crucial that you take time to heal. If you find yourself not able to sleep, whether it be because you've been sleeping too much, or anything of the sorts, check out Netflix or read a good book. Taking time to relax can be almost as effective. 

Try to eat something that helps what you’re feeling. A warm bowl of soup will help your throat, and a cool glass of juice will aid you from feeling lightheaded. Even if you are not hungry, it’s important that you keep feeding your body the nutrients that you need to be happy and healthy.

Take a shower and clean your room. A lot of times, we don’t heal as well because we do not make sure our environments are up to what we need. Make sure you clean your bedding and even throw out your toothbrush. You don’t want to keep using the things that are infected, this will only prolong you feeling bad. Grab a bottle of Lysol and pack of Clorox wipes next time you’re at the store!
