How To Spend Thanksgiving By Yourself

Nov. 20, 2018 by Ashley Sava

thanksgiving aloneSometimes, you can't make it home for Thanksgiving. Maybe it's too far of a journey and plane tickets are not in your budget. Maybe you are too busy catching up on your classwork.

Maybe your boss really needed you and couldn't afford to let you leave for a week. It happens. Here are some ways you can enjoy Thanksgiving, anyway!

Give back

Be grateful for what you have and go serve others at food pantries or charities. Operation Turkey and and Meals on Wheels are just two of many volunteer options in the Austin area.

Without volunteers, these families would not be able to put on a nice dinner for their parents, children, grandchildren, etc. No one should go hungry on Thanksgiving!

Watch a movie

Go see a movie (or two) that you couldn’t convince someone else to watch with you. Whether it be a guilty pleasure or something everyone else has already seen, there is something so satisfying about not worrying about looking for seats together and being able to eat an entire box of popcorn alone.

Have a Friendsgiving

Chances are, you aren’t the only one roughing it alone for Thanksgiving. Collect the other college stragglers, and put on a traditional turkey dinner together. Have everyone volunteer to bring a dish, and enjoy your favorite foods together.

Cook something from scratch

Open a cookbook (or go to Pinterest) and find a complicated recipe and conquer it. It doesn’t even have to be a Thanksgiving meal if you don’t want it to be! You want tacos? Who's going to stop you?

Plus, there is something so satisfying about preparing something to eat that you don’t have to share with anyone. The best part? If you screw it up, no one will be there to judge you except whoever is delivering your pizza after the fail!

Enjoy peace and quiet

Do what you feel like doing, and don't do what you don't feel like doing. No one will be around to tell you to be at grandma’s by this time, to bring this dish or to eat another bite of that casserole. Want to go to the gym? Go for it!

Feel like reading an entire book? Everyone will be too busy to call and interrupt you! Want to eat cranberry sauce straight out of the can while watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? You and me both! Wake up when you want, watch football without someone making your turn off the television and then be grateful that you are afforded the luxury to live like this.
