Student Ministry & Missions Director's Corner
Running in other countries is sometimes challenging, and always an adventure. I don’t know where I am going, so I have learned to memorize land marks, buildings, signs, or trees so that I can find my way back to where I am staying. (Street signs are not very common in a lot of countries!!!) Something interesting happened while I was running in Kenya. We stayed at the same hotel in Bomet (the half way point between Nairobi and Migori) on our way to and from our mission site. On the first run I tried one route and was able to navigate my way back. One week later, I decided to try a couple new, different routes. The interesting thing that happened was that each of my three different routes led me to the “Kenya Women Microfinance Bank – Banking on Women.” At first I thought, “Wow, they have a lot of these Kenya Women banks in this town. What about the men, do they have a bank?” Then I realized that all three of my routes had led me to the exact same location and that there was only need for one Kenya Women Microfinance Bank in this town.
As God would have it, this is actually a really great picture of what I experienced serving on this short term mission trip in Kenya. Student Ministry & Missions partnered with Vision for Africa from Salem Lutheran in Tomball to help bring 26 servant-hearted people to Migori and Kuria Kenya (right by the border of Tanzania). We had a team that worked with Kenyan doctors to provide a medical clinic, eye glass clinic, and cataract surgeries. In just one week they saw over 5,000 people and did more than 75 cataract surgeries, resulting in a lot of thankful people! The other half of the team walked from house to house with Kenyan pastors and community health workers to deliver malaria nets and reading glasses. At least 500 homes were visited in the course of one week. The equally exciting news is that each of these teams (medical, eye glass, and malaria net teams) shared the Gospel of Jesus with everyone we served and many received this Good News with JOY and asked to be contacted by the local pastors so that they can get involved in the church, the body of Christ! Three different routes, but just one destination! JESUS! What an amazing experience it is to help people with their physical and spiritual needs! Our calling in life is to let God use us to share Jesus’ story and reroute people from their path of sin and shame and lead them to the spring of living water!
“For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Revelation 7:17
