Why Major in Digital Marketing & Influence? More Than Likes and Follows

Over my career as a Communication Professor, I've watched the digital landscape transform not just how we connect, but who we're becoming in the process. Every semester, I see brilliant students asking big questions about their future. They want creative careers, but they also want their work to matter. That is why we developed a new B.A. in Digital Marketing & Influence degree at Concordia University Texas launching Fall 2026.
If you're wondering why you should major in digital marketing, the typical answers probably sound familiar: High demand. Six figure potential. Remote flexibility. All true. But here at Concordia University Texas, we're after something greater; something that goes far beyond learning how to go viral. This interdisciplinary major does something unusual: it takes your spiritual, psychological, and creative development as seriously as your technical skills.
A Degree That Develops Your Whole Self
We know that digital jobs are notoriously stressful. The pressure to be "always on" can lead to burnout, anxiety, and a loss of self. What makes our program truly different is our radical commitment to your well-being. We refuse to send you into this field unprepared for its unique challenges. Our 6-credit module on maintaining digital wellness will teach you mindfulness practices, how to set boundaries, and how to prevent burnout. We’re not just training you for social media marketing careers, we're forming you into digital leaders who can sustain this work with resilience, integrity, and purpose.
You'll learn the strategy behind consumer behavior, the psychology of persuasion, and the technical execution of SEO and analytics. But you'll also explore the moral dimensions of digital culture, the formation of digital identity, and your vocation as a truthful storyteller in the digital public square.
This curriculum draws from seven disciplines (Communication, Business, Psychology, Religion, Sociology, Art, and English) because authentic influence requires more than marketing tactics; it requires understanding human beings, culture, ethics, and creativity.
Take the next step toward a Christ-centered career in digital marketing and influence.
Social Media Marketing Careers With a Conscience
The social media marketing careers landscape is vast, but it's also morally complicated. You'll be entering an industry where manipulation is often rewarded, where attention is extracted rather than earned, and where the loudest voice often drowns out the truest one.
Our mission at Concordia Texas is to empower students of all backgrounds to lead lives of critical thought, compassionate action, and courageous leadership. The Concordia Texas digital marketing and influence program embodies that mission by preparing you to ask the questions others won't:
- Whose attention am I seeking, and why?
- Am I building something that serves people, or am I just extracting value from them?
- Can I be successful without compromising my integrity?
Our vision is to raise a generation of influencers who prioritize social good over personal fame, because we believe that when you lead with authenticity and purpose, the impact you make will far outlast any viral moment.
Where Faith Meets the Digital Frontier
Concordia University Texas is rooted in the Lutheran tradition, which means we take seriously the call to serve our neighbors and communities. We challenge students to think critically, explore fearlessly, and lead with courageous compassion.
However, here's what I love most about teaching at Concordia Texas: you don't have to be Lutheran, or even Christian, to thrive here. Our courses, such as Digital Identity, Influence, & Vocation, welcome students of all faith backgrounds to engage in critical reflection and practical application of ethical principles.
What we ask is that you come ready to wrestle with big questions and what it means to be a redemptive presence online. In our close-knit, inclusive community, those conversations happen with intellectual rigor, mutual respect, and genuine care.
The Digital World Needs You
Here's what I tell prospective students: the digital space is noisy and chaotic. But it's also where culture is being made, where movements are born, and where stories are told that change hearts and minds.
We don't need more influencers chasing fame. We need thoughtful, mission-driven leaders who understand that their work has real impacts on real people. We need storytellers committed to truth in an age of misinformation. We need creators who can build communities, not just audiences.
The digital marketing benefits you'll gain from our Digital Marketing & Influence program extend far beyond your resume. You'll leave with vocational clarity, a moral compass, and the resilience to sustain meaningful work in a demanding field.
We'll prepare you for careers in social media management, content creation, digital strategy, brand development, public relations, and community building. But more importantly, you'll be prepared to lead with integrity wherever you go.
Your Next Step
The digital world is waiting for leaders who prioritize social good over performance metrics. If you are ready to combine creativity, strategy, and purpose, the B.A. in Digital Marketing & Influence at Concordia University Texas is designed for you.
I'd love to meet you on a campus visit to our 435-acre campus in Northwest Austin, where 250 acres of protected nature preserve remind us daily that beauty, truth, and thoughtful stewardship matter.
