Proof of Financial Support
To be issued an I-20, you must prove that you are able to support yourself financially for a minimum of one year while attending school in the United States. Financial documents must cover tuition, living expenses (room and board), and books and supplies. Additional funds are required if you have a spouse or children accompanying you.
If you receive sponsorship, your sponsor(s) must sign the required form. Original bank statements dated within the last 90 days must be submitted. All documents must be in English and show amounts in U.S. dollars.
Required Documents
Select one or more ways to show proof of financial support:
- Personal Bank Statements: Checking or savings accounts (usually last 3–6 months).
- Parent/Sponsor Bank Statements: Must include an affidavit of support or sponsorship letter.
- Scholarship or Grant Award Letters: From the university, government, or private organizations.
- Graduate Assistantship/Fellowship Letters: Must detail stipend, tuition remission, or benefits.
- Government or Employer Sponsorship Letters: Guaranteeing payment of tuition and/or living expenses.
- Educational Loan Approval Letters: From a recognized bank or lending institution.
- Investment Accounts: Stocks, bonds, or mutual funds.
- Retirement Accounts: 401k, IRA, pension plans (if funds are accessible).
- Property Ownership Documents: Real estate deeds or similar (show wealth but not cash).
- Business Ownership or Income Statements: If sponsor owns a company.
- Trust Funds: With documentation of access and disbursement schedule.
The required Sponsor Agreement form must also be printed, signed, and notarized or bank-stamped.
