Equity Team Charter

Equity Team Charter

Concordia University Texas, as an institution of Lutheran higher education, upholds a Christ-centered approach to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment where students of all backgrounds can thrive. Central to our mission is empowering students to lead lives of critical thought, compassionate action, and courageous leadership.

We believe a solid commitment to access, diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging is essential to achieve this mission. Concordia Texas nurtures a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that empowers our students to become transformative leaders and catalysts for positive change within their communities and beyond. By prioritizing access, belonging, inclusion, diversity, and equity, we cultivate an atmosphere that aligns with our Christ-centered values and prepares our students for impactful lives of purpose that priorities our Christian call to love and serve our neighbors.

EQUITY TEAM PURPOSE

Building on Concordia Texas' commitment to access, belonging, inclusion, diversity, and equity, the University Equity Team is a vital resource and guide to ensure that our institution remains steadfast in its pursuit of creating an inclusive community for all. As such, we must ensure that all community members are treated respectfully and with dignity.

Considering the rapidly evolving national and local climate and our recognition that there is work to be done to make excellence inclusive, particularly for students of color, the Equity Team's primary focus is ensuring no one in our community experiences racial bias, injustice, or inequity. By providing oversight and support to the University's efforts to confront these issues, the Equity Team seeks to ensure that all students can thrive and achieve their full potential.

Through ongoing dialogue, collaboration, and education, the Equity Team is committed to advancing a culture of equity and inclusion at Concordia Texas that reflects our Christian faith and values. As a community, we must work together to promote justice, diversity, and inclusivity in all aspects of our work, and the Equity Team stands ready to support these efforts.

EQUITY TEAM SCOPE

The committee will guide the work of accessibility, belonging, diversity, equity, and inclusion at Concordia Texas by:

  • Leading and supporting the implementation of the Strategic Initiative to "Close Equity Gaps" and the Presidential Commitment to Racial Justice at the University
  • Conducting equity-focused evaluations, data analysis, and solution recommendations, including identifying institutional inequities and making external data available for informed decision-making
  • Providing guidance, resources, and consultation to students and employees on diversity, equity, and inclusion issues
  • Monitoring the campus climate and creating *brave spaces for conversations around national events and their impact on different communities (including serving as the Campus Climate Response Team)
  • Ensuring that policies, programs, and practices across the University align with access, belonging, inclusion, diversity, and equity values and allocating appropriate resources for this work

* A "safe space" is typically defined as a physical or virtual location where individuals feel free from harm, oppression, or discrimination, but a "brave space" goes further. A brave space allows individuals to engage in open and honest dialogue, even if it means having uncomfortable or difficult conversations, without fear of being judged or marginalized. In a brave space, participants are encouraged to speak their truth and actively listen to others, with the understanding that different perspectives and experiences can lead to greater understanding and growth. A brave space recognizes that learning and personal development often come from discomfort and vulnerability.
